Transforming life experiences into printed patterns

What makes Magnesium's garments unique?
- Explore some behind-the-scenes details to discover how Magnesium is designed to make you stand out from the crowd.

Documenting her surroundings forms the heart of Gerda’s creative process. Then, inspired by an unexpected urban detail, such as a floral or built element, or a shade of color, she creates hand sketches. The process gradually builds up the ideal combination of material, pattern, and color. The motifs that embellish the garments are usually screen-printed by Gerda on every piece of fabric, but she also incorporates digital and sublimated prints in her collections. Although her creations are a reflection of her life experiences, as a designer, the most essential thing for her is to “feel good in the garments.”

-avoid adulthood,but be responsible-

Magnesium’s unisex clothing is characterized by simpler shapes and a wider range of colors, while Gerda’s latest Ripple Rise’ pieces feature more detailed patterns with fewer shades. The designer has chosen three pieces for you to examine, revealing the origins of these patterns. Let’s see!

A cozy first layer or a light second layer

This shirt encapsulates the essence of the Magnesium brand. Gerda describes it as “a spiced-up version of a basic logo shirt”. The back of the garment features a reminder of the brand’s philosophy, emphasizing that alongside mindful living, there’s space for flow experiences. The different abstract shapes that embellish the sleeves serve to balance the typographic elements. The letters G and M, the star, the amorphous plant, and the eye —which serve as a symbolic imprint of the brand’s message — can all be recognized in the motifs. The latter refers to the brand’s credo of caring for both the environment and ourselves. Gerda incorporates these symbols, with subtle variations, across her collections: “The logo always plays a central role in my garments — it has become an integral part of my patterns”.

DELFt DREAM WHITE TEe

The statement piece of the season

You might be surprised to learn that “Delft tile” refers to a style rather than a place of origin. The aesthetics of these handmade ceramic pieces inspired Gerda to create the detailed graphics on the back of this shirt. Although she didn’t originally plan to include white in her new collection, Gerda created this item in a blue-and-white color combination to capture the essence of Delft tiles.

Gerda first used personified versions of the logo’s letters in her social media posts. This inspired her to transform these illustrations into compositions typical of the Delft tiles: the funny anthropomorphic letters are set in ornamental frames against landscapes and urban backdrops. The depicted scenes represent activities Gerda wishes to convey through her brand or ones she personally enjoys. For Gerda, the playful characters embody “the atmosphere I’ve been feeling since I moved here.”

Scarf with versatile possibilities

Compared to other Magnesium garments, this piece is a bit more unconventional: the logo is less prominent, and the source of inspiration comes from an existing fabric pattern. Specifically, it derives from the fabric Gerda used as the base for the Retro Wooly Shirt Jacket. “During the early stages of my design process, I search for textiles to build the collection pieces. I figured it would be exciting to add patterned fabrics to the repertoire that I didn’t design myself. It’s also inspiring to take an existing pattern and expand on it based on my own ideas. This scarf is a perfect example: the jacket’s pattern elements are more ornamental, while the scarf’s are more geometric and regular,” explains Gerda. The concept of the scarf also aims to evoke the character of Delft tiles by reimagining them in a richer color scheme.
